Walk The extra Mile For Your Company
Pramod Batra
As an employee it becomes your responsibility to inform your boss of
any “thefts” by employees. You have to keep your eyes open, ears to
the ground and have a poking nose! It is a moral question of honesty
in a company.
Theft by employees can involve many things: merchandise, raw materials
and money. The definition of theft must be extended to include extra
long lunches and coffee breaks, promoting office politics in the form
of gossip, padding expenses, pilfering office stationery, and so on.
It is estimated that 25 per cent of all employees are inherently
honest and will never steal. Another 15 to 20 per cent will always
steal if given the opportunity. The balance may be tempted to do so if
they believe others are doing so without being apprehended or
adequately punished!
Just like any stealing, it starts very small. Therefore, it is
absolutely essential that the company culture be very specific on the
subject. Running Deepawali cards through the franking machine, making
trunk calls, taking stationery, personal use of photocopiers, these
must be taboo. Of course it starts from the top. But then you must
keep an eye on it and inform the boss accordingly. One good idea in a
company is to allow employees to do photocopying, franking, make
calls-and pay for it. I recommend it fully.
There are also time thieves. If one employee does it, it causes
rightful indignation in other employees. Again, if one has to take
time off, it should not be on the basis of a verbal notice but with
proper paperwork for a “French leave”!
Gambling is another “no-no” and must be nipped in the bud. It is not
to be done in any form, in the office or at home. Gambling includes
betting and chit fund.
Padding petty expenses. Unless employees are told, they are likely to
be tempted to add on to the scooter fare, or charge for it and go by
bus, and so on.
Overtime. Again employees think, unless told, that leaving 15 to 30
minutes early is okay. Employees may also give away or sell for small
gifts information regarding product launching plans, mailing lists or
other confidential data to-competitors-unless they are clearly
educated to the fact that this is unacceptable and why.
Theft by employees in any form is unlikely to occur when employees
feel that management cares about the losses. All workers suspected of
theft must be treated equally.
Taking responsibility in this area differentiates the professional
employee from the ordinary employee. The former must walk the extra
mile.
