Improving performance under high pressure Do you perform better under pressure? Some people are always rushing around in a frenzy and getting the job done. Others react to pressure without showing urgency or frenzy but also get the job done. Studies show that the latter type are better off. They tend to make fewer mistakes, are more efficient and take better decisions. High pressure situations require cool handling. Notice a pilot flying an aeroplane. His decision making has to be precise. He is trained not to press buttons in panic. He first has to force himself to do nothing at all, then he has to methodically go through a check-list that will enable him to reach the correct decisions and then he has to implement his decision. Sometimes all this has to be done in a few seconds. Thanks to that, air disasters are few. The same principle can be applied to your work too. Whatever type of personality you have, you can train yourself to becoming efficient in taking decisions under high pressure and in tough situations. This really has nothing to do with special skills or abilities, but with your reactions. In your work place there are some people who always seem rushed. They have meetings to attend, and appointments to keep. Or, they are doing some intense troubleshooting , one after another. They tend to impress everyone – seeming to be indispensable, important, energetic and efficient. The other type of people may seem relaxed . They have confidence and calm. They tend to show less frenzy. Comparatively they seem slow. This may not necessarily be true. Quick and accurate decision taking is an art that can be developed. Here are a few tips that can help you. Be good at your job and be familiar with the problems that can arise. Mental posture is important so that you can be ready to face a problem rather than be thrown off balance by it. Be ready to face your problems and have an idea on how to tackle them. Every problem cannot be predicted or anticipated. But you can plan on what to do if things fall short or fail. Challenges and unpredictable changes may be inevitable but it is important to have a positive attitude. It makes you confident. And it helps to keep remembering how well you have handled problems that arose in the past and believe that you will tackle all the new problems that will arise in the future too. To stop rushing around, you must concentrate and focus on one job at a time. It will make you less tense and it will keep your concentration in tact. You will be more productive and efficient. Do not expect others to react in the same way as you do. Others will behave and react differently from the way you do. You cannot control everyone but you can certainly work out a method of action and reaction with others that can be effective for you. You may also have to allow for resistance from people and find a way to work around it. Stay sharply focused. Do not be impulsive. Stay calm. Put your thoughts together and take positive action. Do not get pushed around by anyone into anything hasty. High pressure work requires accuracy in decision making – like the pilot in the aeroplane. Use these guidelines and it will help you not only in accurate decision making but also in developing the ability to take them - fast |
