YOUR DESK, YOUR KURUKSHETRA - By Pramod Batra

God has given you a face. And most of us look after our face very well. We comb. We powder our nose. We do every-thing time wise and money wise to make it handsome and beautiful. Some of us have smiley faces and some have grouchy faces - 50% God gives, and 50 % is our own doing! Like our faces, our company gives us a desk. It is up to us how we keep it. This desk can be 4 x 2 or 40 x 20 - the size of the table is unimportant as far as its effectiveness is concerned. It depends upon how well your utilize it. Ensure that your desk oozes efficiency. Place your telephones, typewriter and the other astras and shastras by which you save time where they can be used with the least fatigue. Always consider loose papers scattered around as "pockmarks" on your face! Set up a good work organizer to make sure you have "a place for everything and everything in its place"- this is very important for the desk surface, "Dry clean" your desk and office say, every Saturday after lunch. Throw into file No. 13- the waste basket-whatever has to be marked up, do it. dress-up the contents of your drawers. In my own case, I keep one drawer for various sizes of envelopes so I don't have to disturb my "Hanu-manjee," my secretary. All your drawers should be well arranged so that when Ma Saraswati and Ma Laxmi are looking for people to be blessed, they reward you for orderliness and cleanliness. Do consider a green plant or flower for your desk to add a light touch as it is a known fact that it rests the eyes to look at green leaves and flowers.

Light. Make sure you have an adequate supply and that it zeros it on your desk and your work area. Good lighting reduces fatigue and eye strain. Noise. You may not be able to eliminate it, but once your are aware of it your can manage it to keep it at a tolerable level, which is a must.  Stationery. Keep an eagle eye on it ! Storage, consumption and ordering are in your care. Remember, there is no limit to what your can do to learn and save! Housekeeping. An expert employee must cheerfully tackle the smallest eyesore. For example, you can do or get done a hundred things and there may still be two more things to do that day. For example, a fused bulb, a noisy chair, a Door Closer (choon, choon), smudges on the wall, torn seat covers and so on. A tried and tested tip: make a list of sore items. Imagine yourself coming down into your office from Mars, and have a look around with a telescope and microscope. Make electrical, carpentry, masonry To Be Done lists. Feed them into your computer. Now comes the creative part. Find out who can do what, and get after him! Politely. Politely. Politely, with hourly or daily or weekly reminders. If it still does not work, try to find out what is the reason. Money, Authority, Procrastination, Overwork. Then don't forget, there are a hundred ways to skin a cat! In my job, at the office, I think of a fused bulb or a squeaky chair as a pockmark on my face.

Similarly, I do not allow broken chairs to be "stored away"! Get going, get things done, and you will become a hero in your office and to yourself. Proceed with caution and determination: you may need to go slow at times, use more diplomacy, more doing it yourself, team work, or more thank you's- and to the right person. If Suresh has repaired your plug socket and dressed up the cables, do tell Suresh's boss in a creative manner.

Everyone is a link between the company and the outside world. Do the right thing, have the right appearance, the right moods-and a smile-every minute. You won't go wrong..
