Networking is a Higher form of Karma
Pramod Batra
No person, including you
and I, is so worthless that he cannot help someone else. And everyone
needs help sometime. Good relationships and associates, colleagues,
superiors, and people in general are more valuable than money, because
you can’t buy good relationships.
There is a Panchatantra story I used to tell my daughters when they
were small, and hopefully this has become part of their psyche. A lion
was sleeping. The son of a rat, in his playful mood, started climbing
on the sleeping lion! The irritated lion caught hold of the rat and
was going to crush him when the rat appealed for mercy, stating that
someday the rat would help the lion. The lion roared away in laughter,
and let the rat slip away to freedom.
Within a year, the lion got caught in a nylon trap. He soon realized
his helplessness and started roaring for help. He was amazed to see
the rat with his friends getting onto the net and within a matter of
30 minutes the lion was free. This is networking in the animal world.
This is the fruit of karma.
You and I have to be nice to everyone we come across. Remember the
saying - everyone can be nice to a king, but to be nice to a beggar
woman takes character, a real man, a valuable man. During my last six
decades, I tried to be nice to over 10,000 people and maybe less than
a dozen reciprocated in a big way, but it gave me quantum jumps in my
success and happiness.
Networking is like spending money on advertising! Everyone knows that
86 percent of it is waste but there is no way to find out which 86
percent! So, keep on advertising wisely and keep on doing your good
karmas.
Do your karma without thinking about or expecting the fruits of your
action. Do your actions for the satisfaction they give you. Be like
Jesus Christ - he cured 12 lepers and only one stayed to give thanks!
Keep your Rolodex (visiting cards folder) up to date. Not for the
“fruits” only but to do your “karma”. Let us say Raman wants to get a
thing done in Escorts - it is your karma to help Raman. Then Madan may
need something from your other friend Gupta, and you get that done.
You have started a chain-reaction of good karmas among people - debits
and credits - and that is being a karmayogi. A karmayogi is always
happy, always satisfied and is always in a state of ecstasy.
Again, it depends not on your stature or your status. More often, the
bigger people are the “misers” and the lesser people are the great
givers. Remember the Krishna and Sudama story. It is not the amount
you give - but how you give. Here you can be like a cow - a Kamdhenu-or
a proverbial goat, which gives milk but with it’s droppings. Good
English people taught us give and take. Add what our karma tells us -
give and take and give. Repeat. Give and take and give. Buddy, you
will never go wrong.
And don’t keep a ledger - even a mental ledger - of debits and
credits. Do it for the sake of giving, for the love of giving. You
will become bigger than Ford and Rockefeller, J.R.D. Tata and G.D.
Birla! Not in the eye of the world around you maybe - but in your own
eyes. And that is good karma. Period.
